Muscat: A surgery team from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) recently performed the Sultanate of Oman's first surgical operation using the internal lymphatic duct closure technique to treat M©ni¨re's disease in a patient's ear. This significant step reflects the development of national capabilities in providing specialized healthcare in Oman.
According to Oman News Agency, the operation was led by Dr. Nasser bin Mohammed Al Tamami, a Consultant Surgeon at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, University Medical City. It showcased the integrated specialized expertise available in Oman for providing advanced treatment options, particularly for cases that do not respond to traditional treatments. This development is poised to improve the quality of life for patients, eliminating the need for them to seek treatment abroad. M©ni¨re's disease is a chronic inner ear disorder characterized by spontaneous and severe vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear pressure. If untreated, it may result in partial or complete hearing loss.
The successful operation represents an institutional approach to upgrading health services and enhancing the integration of healthcare, diagnosis, and therapeutic intervention. It also supports the educational and research environment, contributing to the localization of modern medical knowledge.
This achievement underscores the University Medical City's efforts to develop an integrated healthcare model that combines clinical excellence, national capacity building, and innovation, aiming for a sustainable impact on community health.
