Muscat: A set of agreements were signed today between the Oman Environmental Services Holding Company ‘be’ah’ and several governorates in the Sultanate of Oman for the transfer of duties and responsibilities for municipal waste collection and transport services from containers. This move will involve the governorates of Musandam, Al Buraimi, A’Dakhiliyah, North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, South A’Sharqiyah, A’Dhahirah, and Al Wusta.
According to Oman News Agency, the signing of these agreements is part of the government’s strategy to enhance institutional integration in the management of the solid municipal waste sector and to achieve goals related to governance and environmental sustainability. This initiative aims to improve the quality and efficiency of municipal services, ensuring they are managed according to the highest modern technical and environmental standards. The goal is to build more sustainable and cleaner cities, contributing to a safe and healthy urban environment.
The agreements outline that the governorates will gradually begin assuming responsibility for supervising waste collection and transport operations from containers starting from 1 December. Meanwhile, be’ah Company will continue to manage and operate its technical facilities, which include engineered landfills, transfer stations, and facilities for treating healthcare and hazardous waste. Additionally, be’ah will focus on developing circular economy projects and improving resource management efficiency, leveraging waste as a sustainable economic resource.
