UTAS Hosts World Geographic Information Systems Day in Salalah

Salalah: The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) in Salalah celebrated World Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day, emphasizing its dedication to advancing modern spatial technologies and their role in sustainable development and national visions.

According to Oman News Agency, the event aimed to underscore the importance of GIS technology in scientific research, decision-making, and addressing engineering, environmental, and economic challenges. It served as a platform for knowledge exchange among academics, students, and representatives from government and private sectors, highlighting the latest applications and projects while reinforcing the University’s community engagement.

The celebration specifically targeted school students, introducing them to the basics and future prospects of GIS technology and encouraging enrollment in technical and spatial disciplines.

The program featured several working papers discussing water network management, spatial artificial intelligence (AI), and integrating geographic data to produce accurate maps in Oman. Presentations also explored GIS’s role in enhancing Dhofar Municipality services, spatial geo-intelligence in national addressing, the ArcGIS Pro platform, and sustainable urban development.

An exhibition accompanied the ceremony, with government, private, and educational institutions displaying their GIS applications aligned with Oman Vision 2040. Interactive competitions and the recognition of participants and sponsors were also part of the event.
