UN Says Destruction in Southern Lebanon Far Worse Than Initial Estimates

Nouakchott: The scale of destruction in southern Lebanon is far greater than initial rapid assessment estimates, the UNDP Resident Representative in Lebanon has said, adding that the current figures do not capture the full extent of the losses suffered by the region. Blerta Aliko said the report, prepared with the National Council for Scientific Research, only covers direct physical damage to buildings up to the end of April 2026. It does not include damage to public and private infrastructure or the economic losses from recent events, she added.

According to Oman News Agency, assessment operations are continuing, Aliko said, with further updates and reports to be issued as field surveys are completed and new data becomes available, providing a more comprehensive and accurate picture of the damage and needs in affected areas.
