South Korea and US Gear Up for Critical Trade Negotiations Ahead of Tariff Deadline

Seoul: The Republic of Korea’s presidential office has announced a concerted effort to engage in trade negotiations with Washington, as high-level meetings are set for next week to address impending tariffs. This strategic move comes in response to looming trade barriers that could significantly impact bilateral relations.

According to Oman News Agency, the announcement was made following an emergency meeting co-chaired by Kim Yong-beom, the presidential chief of staff for policy, and National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac. The meeting was convened to assess the current status of discussions and to fine-tune Seoul’s strategy in light of the approaching 1st August deadline for the imposition of new US tariffs.

The presidential office highlighted the US’s significant interest in the shipbuilding sector, with both nations expressing a commitment to strengthening cooperation in this area. The ongoing negotiations are crucial, aiming to prevent the implementation of a proposed 25% “reciprocal” tariff by the US, alongside potential duties on steel and automobiles, slated to be enforced on 1 August 2025.
