Oman Marks Agriculture Day with Ceremonial Celebrations at Sohar University

Sohar:The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, celebrated Agriculture Day at Sohar University in North Al Batinah Governorate. The event was held under the auspices of Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.

According to Oman News Agency, Eng. Nasser Ali Al Marshoudi, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources in North Al Batinah Governorate, highlighted the significance of agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and water resources in Oman's economic diversification. These sectors contributed approximately RO 623.5 million to the non-oil Gross Domestic Product in the first half of 2026, reflecting a growth of 3.3 percent compared to the previous year, and accounting for 3.2 percent of the total Gross Domestic Product.

Al Marshoudi noted that the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) facilitated investment projects in the food security sectors, valued at about RO 1.87 billion. These investments were driven by the food security labs' outputs, launching investment packages and empowering initiatives for sector growth and expanded investment opportunities. By the end of September 2026, the total number of offered investment opportunities reached 463, surpassing the target of 400, and were valued at over RO 680.8 million across 192 projects.

During the 2025/2026 agricultural season, approved distributions included 18,119 tissue-culture and vegetative date palm offshoots and 40,541 fruit seedlings within economic model fields. Wheat production surpassed 10,000 tons, contributing to local production enhancement, food security system localization, and import reliance reduction. Furthermore, modern technologies such as drones for pest control, hydroponic and vertical farming, and solar energy were integrated into agricultural operations, supporting productivity and resource efficiency.

Efforts to reduce carbon emissions are underway in coordination with the Oman Net Zero Center, aiming for net zero by 2050. The Ministry also prioritizes investment in scientific research and innovation, partnering with institutions like Sultan Qaboos University and Sohar University to advance agricultural development.

The ceremony concluded with the signing of agreements for agricultural projects in the food security sector, along with visual presentations and seedling planting activities to promote sustainable agricultural practices and resource conservation.
