Oman Highlights Global Health Governance at 79th WHO Assembly in Geneva

Geneva: The Sultanate of Oman is actively participating in the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA79) taking place in Geneva. Oman emphasized the need for strengthening global health governance and enhancing coordination mechanisms to address evolving global challenges, particularly those related to climate change and cross-border health hazards.

According to Oman News Agency, Oman is setting a benchmark by advancing its national epidemiological surveillance systems, improving diagnostic capabilities of reference laboratories, and updating emergency plans in line with the 'One Health' approach. The establishment of integrated digital platforms for managing emergencies is also a key focus.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Dr. Rashid Mohammed Al Alawi, Director General of Khoula Hospital, highlighted the non-negotiable institutional duty of preparedness for health emergencies. He noted that Khoula Hospital maintains rapid response plans and has trained staff ready to operate under challenging conditions. Dr. Rashid mentioned the development of a comprehensive information system that aligns with both national and international trends, aiding in the transfer of knowledge and health technology.

Dr. Hani Ahmed Al Qadi, Director General of Health Services in Dhofar Governorate, stated that the International Health Regulations (2005) serve as a foundation for a global solidarity pact, which is reflected in daily procedures. These range from enhancing preparedness at entry points to improving laboratory efficiency and updating emergency plans. He emphasized that climate challenges necessitate coordination between health, environment, and agriculture sectors, calling for increased investment in these areas.
