Muscat: Oman has continued its progress in the 2025 Global Press Freedom Index, climbing three places from 137th to 134th globally.
According to Oman News Agency, the index, published by Reporters Without Borders (RSF)-a Paris-based organization with consultative status at the United Nations-assesses press freedom conditions across 180 countries and territories annually. It evaluates five key criteria: legal framework, political context, economic and sociocultural environment, and safety of journalists.
Last year, Oman introduced a new media law, aligning with evolving developments in the media sector. The legislation safeguards journalists’ rights and ensures freedom of opinion and expression in accordance with the country’s Basic Law.
