Evacuation Ordered as 175 Fires Break Out in South and North Carolina

South Carolina: The governor of South Carolina in the United States has declared a state of emergency, as firefighters battle 175 wildfires that erupted across South and North Carolina overnight. Windy and dry conditions have exacerbated the situation, threatening homes and prompting evacuations. There are ongoing response operations to tackle the sprawling wildfires, which have burned a combined 4,200 acres across the state. The South Carolina State Fire Marshal reported active blazes in Horry, Spartanburg, Oconee, Union, and Pickens counties.

According to Oman News Agency, the quick-spreading fire had burned more than 1,600 acres by the end of the day and was threatening the communities of Walkers Woods and Avalon, as reported by the South Carolina Forest Commission. Fire officials stated that the fire was 30% contained.

The fires are attributed to a summer heat wave and drought affecting the southern part of South America, a result of the El Nino weather phenomenon. Scientists have warned that global wa
rming increases the risk of natural disasters, such as extreme heat and fires.
