Brussels: EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has announced that the bloc is considering expanding its Red Sea naval mission, known as Aspides, to cover the protection of maritime navigation across the wider region once the war in Iran ends. Speaking after a meeting of EU defence ministers, Kallas stated that Operation Aspides already contributes to safeguarding navigation in the Red Sea, but its activities could be extended to the broader region.
According to Oman News Agency, some countries have pledged additional vessels for the mission, which would help if a decision is taken to expand its scope. The European Union (EU) launched Operation Aspides in February 2024 following attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. It later extended the mission's mandate until 28 February 2027 after a strategic review.
