Muscat: Acting in cooperation with the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Environment Authority has initiated a 4-day regional workshop focusing on compliance with the principles of the UN Convention. The workshop, which commenced today, highlights topics related to Article 6 and carbon pricing, gathering representatives from various government departments.
According to Oman News Agency, the workshop aims to enhance regional interaction and cooperation among member states towards implementing the UN Convention’s provisions, aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement. The event seeks to address key gaps in implementing Article 6 of the Convention, which gained full force following the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The regional workshop serves as an interactive platform fostering genuine partnerships between member states and experts from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The agenda includes discussions on measures for assessing global carbon pricing, with a focus on the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA).
The workshop will analyze main trends endorsed by MENA countries, align carbon pricing with Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), review regional experiences with Article 6 mechanisms, and exchange expertise on developing carbon pricing policies to support NDCs.
Notably, the regional workshop is part of the Sultanate of Oman’s preparations for ‘Oman Climate Week,’ scheduled from 14 to 16 September 2026. The event aims to unite global leaders and experts to cooperate on environmental commitments and combat environmental pollution, targeting objectives like zero neutrality, green economy, circular economy, biodiversity protection, optimal nature reserve management, and sustainable vegetation cover development.
