Amendments to the Japanese government oust the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made adjustments to his government, including changing the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, while practically maintaining the main structure of the government and the leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.

At the same time, the number of women among Ministers rose to five for the first time.

The 70-year-old former Minister of Justice, Yoko Kamikawa, was appointed to the position of Foreign Minister, who replaced Yoshimasa Hayashi in this position, which he had held since 2021.

Kamikawa graduated from the University of Tokyo and received a master's degree from Harvard University.

During her tenure as Minister of Justice, Kamikawa signed decrees to implement 16 death sentences. Among them, 13 cases related to the execution of members of the Japanese terrorist sect Aum Shinrikyo.

Minoru Kihara, 54 years old, was appointed to the position of Defense Minister.

This man did not previously hold ministerial positions, but he was an advisor to the Prime Minister on national security issues, and in 2013 he worked as a representative of the Ministry of Defense in Parliament.
