Muscat: The 29th edition of the Muscat International Book Fair commenced today at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center, inaugurated by HH Sayyid Dr. Fahd Al Julanda Al Said, the Vice Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University.
According to Oman News Agency, the event’s opening ceremony was attended by prominent figures, including Sheikh Dr. Sultan Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council in the UAE and Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, and Dr. Abdullah Nasser Al Harrasi, Minister of Information and Chairman of the Main Committee of Muscat International Book Fair. The exhibition displays a wide range of cultural, intellectual, and scientific publications, with a total of 681,041 titles, comprising 467,413 Arabic books and 213,610 foreign titles.
The fair features dedicated spaces for children’s activities, workshops, an Arabic language corner, and a children’s culture section, with 155 scheduled events including interactive shows and cultural caf©s. The North Al Sharqiyah Governorate’s pavilion, the guest of honor, highlights the region’s culture, history, and achievements.
The Ministry of Information has set up four pavilions, while Saudi Arabia participates with 38 publishing houses as part of the Saudi Cultural Days. The participation aims to celebrate and strengthen Omani-Saudi relations.
The North Al Sharqiyah Governorate, as the guest of honor, marks a significant cultural milestone, showcasing its literary and heritage treasures. The pavilion features an AI-powered platform and a children’s corner dedicated to Omani identity, organizing 15 events on various topics.
Ahmed Saud Al Rawahi, Director of the Muscat International Book Fair, noted the fair’s theme, “Cultural Diversity: Enriching Civilizations,” aims to foster international dialogue. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Mohammad Al Qasimi launched his 21-volume book ‘The Portuguese in the Sea of Oman: Events in Annals from 1497 to 1757’ during the event.
Qatar and Kuwait are also participating, emphasizing cultural ties and exchanges. The fair hosts 674 publishing houses from 35 countries, underscoring its regional significance as Kuwait prepares to be the 2025 Arab Capital of Culture and Media.
