United Nations: The ceasefire agreement in Sudan entered into force today for a period of one week

The tripartite mechanism, “the United Nations, the African Union and the IGAD Commission”, confirmed that: “Today, the twenty-second of May, at 09:45 pm Khartoum time, the ceasefire agreement between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces is scheduled to enter into force, indicating that it stands ready to support the effective implementation of the ceasefire, which will extend for seven days, as well as regional and international efforts aimed at ending the fighting quickly in Sudan.

According to the United Nations Information Center, the tripartite mechanism called on the entire international community and humanitarian actors to urgently unite their efforts to support the Sudanese people during these critical times.

The tripartite mechanism had welcomed the signing by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, in the city of Jeddah, last Saturday, of an agreement for a short-term ceasefire and humanitarian arrangements.

According to the United Nations Information Center, the tripartite mechanism stressed the importance of respecting the ceasefire in order to facilitate the delivery of aid to more than 25 million Sudanese in urgent need of aid, or more than half of the population of Sudan.

The mechanism urged the two parties to abide by the ceasefire that began today, calling on the entire international community and humanitarian actors to unify their efforts urgently to support the Sudanese people during these critical times.
