Muscat: The Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has initiated a public consultation on a draft regulation aimed at managing permits for services in the telecommunications sector. This initiative seeks input from relevant stakeholders and interested parties as part of ongoing efforts to develop the regulatory environment, enhance service quality, and improve business efficiency within the sector.
According to Oman News Agency, the proposed regulation is designed to oversee the activities and services provided by companies and individuals involved in telecommunications. It aims to establish a clear regulatory framework that aligns with the sector's development needs. The draft regulation focuses on the issuance of permits for a broad range of services, including the installation and maintenance of telecommunications devices, network project construction, system and application development, and information security, among others. The regulation classifies permits into four main categories: manufacturers, systems integration and development, passive infrastructure services, and professional support services.
The draft also outlines the procedure for applying for permits, decision timelines, permit validity, and renewal processes. It emphasizes transparency and ease of business operations by specifying procedures for amending or canceling permits and setting controls for ownership changes. Additionally, the regulation mandates compliance with information security standards and promotes the empowerment of small and medium enterprises by ensuring minimum contract allocations, enhancing local content, and improving national workforce skills through training.
