Muscat: An integrated surgical team at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) has successfully performed a delicate operation to remove a tumour from a critical area of a patient’s brain using the Awake Craniotomy technique. The procedure, the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman, involved operating while the patient was awake.
According to Oman News Agency, the procedure is considered one of the most advanced and complex neurosurgeries. It requires extreme precision and close coordination among members of the medical team to ensure that the patient is fully awake and maintains critical functions.
The surgery was conducted by Dr. Ghassan Salim Al Sudairy, a senior consultant neurosurgeon, along with a select group of Omani experts from various specialties. During the hours of the surgery, the medical team interacted with the patient, which helped in removing the tumour completely without any neurological side effects.
The accomplishment constitutes a milestone in the development of the national health system, affirming the competence of national cadres and the readiness of Omani health institutions to keep pace with the latest global updates in the medical field.
