SOHAR Port and Freezone Strengthens Role in Oman’s Economic Progress

Sohar: SOHAR Port and Freezone has solidified its status as a key player in Oman's economic diversification efforts, creating a seamless trade, industry, and investment network within an efficient and competitive environment.

According to Oman News Agency, SOHAR Port and Freezone plays a crucial role in facilitating logistical connectivity, enhancing supply chain competitiveness, supporting economic diversification, and maximizing value by localizing production chains and developing local content. Since 2019, the port has seen significant growth, increasing total handling capacity from 62 million metric tons to 72 million metric tons annually by the end of 2025. This growth is attributed to increased trade movement, better integration within global supply chains, and growing confidence from international shipping lines and industrial operators.

The port also experienced a rise in the number of vessels received, growing from 3,144 to 3,427, underscoring its importance as a logistics hub both regionally and internationally. Additionally, SOHAR Port and Freezone attracted $968 million in new investments through eight agreements, leasing 76 hectares of land aimed at supporting exports and aligning with national priorities related to industrial diversification.

Emile Hoogsteden, CEO of SOHAR Port, stated that the port and freezone continues to develop an integrated industrial logistics system supporting trade and industrial growth while enhancing supply chain resilience. He highlighted that their growth is a result of strategic planning and continuous infrastructure investment, focusing on reliability and sustainability. Beyond boosting movement and investments, SOHAR Port and Freezone has been committed to developing the local community, benefiting around 50,000 individuals through corporate social responsibility programs in education, skill development, healthcare, and environmental projects.

Eng. Raid Al Rubaiey, CEO of SOHAR Freezone and Deputy CEO of SOHAR Port, remarked that the investments in SOHAR Port and Freezone reflect confidence in Oman's economic trajectory and institutional stability, aligning with Oman Vision 2040 objectives. He emphasized that SOHAR Port and Freezone functions as an integrated national system fostering comprehensive and sustainable development through partnerships between the government, industry, and local community.

SOHAR Port and Freezone recently held its annual reception, gathering officials, investors, and partners to discuss growth opportunities and strengthen impactful partnerships. This event coincides with a period of significant economic acceleration in Oman over the past six years, contributing to redefined priorities, enhanced financial sustainability, and a more attractive investment environment, aligning with Oman Vision 2040 under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.
