Oman’s “Razat” Banana Variety Registered with UPOV

Muscat:The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources has successfully registered the "Razat" banana variety with the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). This achievement was carried out by the Directorate General of Agriculture and Animal Research in collaboration with the Royal Court Affairs, specifically the management of the Royal Razat Farm.

According to Oman News Agency, the registration process involved comprehensive technical examinations to ensure the banana variety met criteria for novelty, distinctness, and stability. The Plant Variety Registration Committee confirmed that the "Razat" banana variety complied with these standards, thereby approving its registration.

This registration highlights the integration of research, agricultural production, and resource protection with legislative support and investment. It demonstrates the potential of agricultural initiatives to evolve into national assets with scientific and economic value. Such developments are expected to promote innovation, enhance local product value, and create new investment opportunities, ultimately strengthening the agricultural sector's contribution to Oman's national economy.

The Ministry emphasized that this registration is a part of a broader national strategy to protect and sustainably utilize plant genetic resources. By establishing frameworks for development and documentation, Oman aims to enhance the value of its agricultural resources.

Dr. Safaa Mohammed Al Farsi, Head of the Seed Research and Plant Genetic Resources Department, noted that registering plant varieties is crucial for conserving genetic resources. The process not only provides legal protection but also creates a scientific record for use in agricultural research and development.

The registration of the "Razat" banana variety, part of Oman's commitment under the Law on the Protection of the Rights of Breeders of New Plant Varieties, underscores the importance of conserving plant diversity and knowledge within the country. The legislative framework supports agricultural innovation and encourages documentation and development of plant varieties, balancing the protection of breeders' rights with opportunities for research and economic growth.
