Muscat: The French Football Federation have appointed Zinedine Zidane as the new head coach of the national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps, president Philippe Diallo announced at a press conference today.

According to Oman News Agency, Zidane, 54, is one of football's most iconic figures. As a player, he led France to World Cup glory in 1998 and European Championship success in 2000, and was named Ballon d'Or winner the same year.

In management, he enjoyed a historic spell at Real Madrid, winning three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles from 2016 to 2018 and lifting 11 trophies across two stints in charge.

Zidane is expected to take up his duties in the coming weeks, with high hopes of restoring France to the top of the international game.
