China Generated More Solar Power Than the Entire World Combined in 2025

Muscat: The global energy sector underwent a remarkable shift in 2025, as solar power posted record growth, accounting for about 75 percent of the rise in global electricity demand. For the first time, fossil fuel-based electricity generation declined worldwide even as consumption continued to grow, according to a new report.

According to Oman News Agency, China led the transformation, adding 336 terawatt-hours of solar capacity - more than the combined total of all other countries, which added around 300 terawatt-hours, the Global Electricity Review 2026 report by British research centre Ember said.

Global solar additions reached 636 terawatt-hours, a 33 percent increase from 2024, making solar the fastest-growing energy source for the fourth consecutive year, the report added. The rapid expansion of clean energy - particularly in China and India - has directly reduced global dependence on fossil fuels and helped lower worldwide carbon emissions.
