Social Development Ministry Partners with GUtech on Vocational Training for Disabilities

Muscat: The Ministry of Social Development and the German University of Technology (GUtech) have formalized a cooperation agreement to launch a specialized training program aimed at enhancing employment and vocational integration for individuals with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disabilities, and Down syndrome.

According to Oman News Agency, the agreement outlines the provision of vocational and technical training opportunities specifically tailored for individuals enrolled at the National Autism Center and the Vocational Assessment and Rehabilitation Center. The initiative seeks to equip participants with skills that align with current labor market demands, thereby improving their prospects for sustainable employment.

Dr. Abdullah Hamoud Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Development for Persons with Disabilities Affairs, and Dr. Hussain Suleiman Al Salmi, Deputy Rector for Administration and Finance of GUtech, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective institutions.

The program is designed to impart both basic and advanced technical skills in areas such as operating Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, 3D printing, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD). In addition to technical training, the program emphasizes the development of social and employability skills, facilitating participants' integration into the workforce and enhancing their opportunities for employment, advanced training, or entrepreneurship. It also aims to establish a vocational training model that can be expanded into other professional fields for those whose abilities align with the program's offerings.

Participants will engage in both theoretical and practical training, focusing on vocational skills as well as communication, language, discipline, professional conduct, and work readiness.

Dr. Abdullah Hamoud Al Harthy emphasized the Ministry's dedication to broadening rehabilitation and economic empowerment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. He highlighted the importance of partnerships with academic institutions in building innovative national models for vocational integration.

Dr. Hussain Suleiman Al Salmi noted that the agreement furthers GUtech's commitment to leveraging its academic and technical resources in service to the community. He emphasized the role of higher education institutions in contributing to community service and addressing developmental challenges through the application of scientific knowledge and modern technologies.
