Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman today took part in the 118th regular session of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States, which convened in Cairo. The Omani delegation was headed by Dr. Nasser bin Rashid Al Maawali, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy.
According to Oman News Agency, the meeting addressed the report of the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States on the progress of joint Arab economic and social action, alongside preparations for the economic and social agenda of the Arab League Council's forthcoming 35th session in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The session's agenda included several economic topics, notably updates to the greater Arab free trade zone and efforts towards the completion of the Arab Customs Union. Discussions also focused on expanding investment and trade among Arab countries and maximizing resource utilization for the benefit of the Arab world.
Food security and agricultural development were central to the Council's deliberations. The meeting included a report on food security in Arab countries, a follow-up on the implementation of the Arab Programme for Sustainable Food Security, and a review of updates related to the Arab Sustainable Agricultural Development Strategy 2020-2030.
Additionally, the meeting addressed the Arab Strategy for Sustainable Management of Rangeland Resources 2020-2040 and the Arab Strategy for Aquaculture 2018-2037. The Council exchanged views on Arab-international cooperation in social and developmental fields, alongside reports and decisions from relevant Arab ministerial councils and committees. National initiatives on developing the Arab Skills Framework and enhancing economic empowerment through social protection programs were also discussed.
The session elaborated on experiences in artificial intelligence and risk-based governance against the backdrop of rapid global economic and labor market changes. It also reviewed the activities of specialized Arab organizations and joint Arab action institutions affiliated with the Secretariat General of the League of Arab States.
The Sultanate of Oman's participation in the session reflects the country's commitment to supporting joint Arab action and enhancing cooperation and coordination among Arab countries in economic, social, and developmental fields.
