Muscat:Khoula Hospital: Khoula Hospital has started using Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) technology as part of its efforts to enhance specialized therapeutic services for patients with drug-resistant epilepsy.
According to Oman News Agency, the hospital's implementation of VNS technology marks a significant development in its surgical epilepsy treatment program. This advancement aims to provide new treatment options for patients who do not respond adequately to conventional medications, supporting the localization of specialized medical services in the Sultanate of Oman.
Dr. Ahmed bin Suleiman Al Azri, the Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon and head of the Neurosurgery Unit at Khoula Hospital, highlighted that the integration of the hospital's neurosurgery, neurology, and epilepsy teams has been crucial in launching this technology. The expansion of these services aims to reduce the need for patients to seek treatment abroad, offering advanced care within the national healthcare system.
Dr. Ahmed also mentioned that future plans include introducing specialized surgeries under the epilepsy treatment program, which will strengthen partnerships with specialized regional and international centers. This collaboration will facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge, ensuring that the hospital keeps pace with the latest therapeutic practices and technologies. The initiative is part of the broader goal to localize epilepsy surgery services in Oman and improve patients' quality of life by controlling seizure frequency.
