Foundation Stone Laid for National Centre for Genomics in Oman

A'Seeb:The Ministry of Health celebrated the laying of the foundation stone for the National Centre for Genomics and Human Data (Omani Genome) in the Wilayat of A'Seeb, Muscat Governorate. The construction is set to cost over RO 4,200,000.

According to Oman News Agency, the Centre, spanning over 10,625 square metres, will be completed in nine months, with an additional 45 days for equipment and preparation. The ceremony was led by Dr. Hilal Ali Al Sabti, Minister of Health.

Dr. Khalid Al Rasadi, a professor at Sultan Qaboos University and supervisor of the Omani Genome Programme, stated that the project supports Oman Vision 2040 by studying the genomic map of Omani society and establishing a reference database. This initiative aims to enhance Oman's position in genomic research and strategic healthcare.

Dr. Ali Al Lawati, Adviser to the Minister of Health for Engineering Affairs, elaborated on the project’s design, highlighting its compliance with modern construction and biosafety standards. The Centre will feature advanced genome sequencing devices and an automated biobank capable of storing over one million samples at ultra-low temperatures.

The project, part of the first phase of the Omani Genome Programme (2025-2030), plans to sequence the genomes of twenty thousand Omani citizens. By 2040, the programme aims to include 100 thousand participants, aiding in the development of a genetic database to support personalised medicine and improve disease detection.

This project emphasizes the Ministry's commitment to future technologies and medical innovation, adhering to high privacy and ethical standards to protect genomic data. It aims to advance healthcare by integrating genetic analysis with national health records and positioning Oman as a leader in medical research.
