Council of Oman Engages in OIC Parliamentary Union’s 19th Session in Jakarta

Jakarta: The Council of Oman took part in the 19th session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of OIC Member States (PUIC), held in Jakarta, Indonesia, today. Oman’s delegation was headed by Khalid Hilal Al Ma’awali, Chairman of the Shura Council.

According to Oman News Agency, in his speech at the opening of the session, Al Ma’awali lauded the theme of the conference titled “PUIC Silver Jubilee – Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.” He emphasized that the theme aligns with aspirations for national progress built on justice, integrity, and transparency. Highlighting the importance of good governance, Al Ma’awali noted that societies thrive not just on natural resources but through wise management by efficient and independent institutions that gain societal trust.

Al Ma’awali underscored the critical role of parliaments in reinforcing justice, integrity, and transparency. As legislative bodies, parliaments enact laws and regulate transparency and reform. He noted that Oman’s experience in promoting good governance is central to future planning, particularly under Oman Vision 2040, which prioritizes governance to ensure comprehensive national development and efficient institutional performance.

He further explained that Oman Vision 2040 aims to establish an integrated system of good governance, focusing on accountability, justice, and the rule of law, while adopting best practices for sustainable government services. The vision also emphasizes societal involvement in decision-making, balancing economic growth with social development.

Addressing international issues, Al Ma’awali highlighted the global failure to tackle humanitarian crises and violations of international law, especially concerning the Palestinian people in Gaza. He condemned the lack of fair global governance and effective international accountability, which perpetuates occupation and suffering. He called for political and legal actions to support Palestinian rights.

The Council of Oman delegation also participated in the Arab Group’s coordination meeting, discussing the 20th session’s hosting, Executive Committee nominations, and representation in Union standing committees. It was decided that Oman and Saudi Arabia would continue representing the Arab Group in the Executive Committee, with the next meeting planned in Mauritania.
