Muscat: The committee responsible for overseeing the execution of the ‘Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women’ (CEDAW) convened for its second meeting in 2025 today. The session was led by Dr. Laila Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development and Chairperson of the Committee.
According to Oman News Agency, the meeting reviewed recent progress on initiatives aimed at advancing the status of women. Key among these is the launch of a web page in collaboration with the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) that provides indicators about Omani women. This resource, introduced in October 2025, is designed to offer comprehensive data and insights.
The committee also examined advancements in the 6th edition of the National Campaign for Empowering Mothers, initiated in November 2025. This campaign is part of a broader effort that includes programs to empower female inmates and updates on the project to publish the ‘Encyclopedia of Omani Women’.
Further discussions included the outcomes of the Arab Youth Dialogue Programme 2025. This initiative, a joint effort by the Ministry of Social Development and the Arab Women’s Organization in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, seeks to enhance understanding of women’s and family issues while developing participants’ dialogue and negotiation skills, particularly in forming evidence-based positions.
The committee also explored the ‘Women’s Economic Opportunities Index’ and the ‘2025 Excellence Award for Gender Equality in Educational Institutions’.
