CBO Unveils First Polymer One Rial Commemorative Banknote

Muscat: The Central Bank of Oman has announced the issuance of the One Rial Polymer Commemorative Banknote, marking a significant milestone as the first polymer banknote in the history of Omani currency. The new banknote is set to enter circulation on 11 January 2026.

According to Oman News Agency, this commemorative banknote is crafted from polymer, which differs from the traditional cotton-based banknotes, offering enhanced durability and security features. Measuring 145x76 mm, the banknote's design integrates key national landmarks, featuring the Oman Botanic Garden on the front and the Sayyid Tarik bin Taimour Cultural Complex, Duqm Port, and Duqm Refinery on the back.

The banknote is equipped with several security features, including a large transparent window modeled after the arched windows of the Oman Botanic Garden and optically variable ink depicted by the Frankincense Tree on the front, alongside iridescent ink showcasing the CBO's pattern on the back.

The Central Bank of Oman has assured that the new One Rial commemorative banknote will circulate alongside existing banknotes and will retain its legal tender status for all transactions. Additionally, 1000 uncut sheets and 10,000 banknotes in specially designed envelopes will be available for purchase at the Central Bank of Oman locations in Ruwi, Salalah, and Sohar, as well as at Oman Post's sales window at the Opera Galleria, starting from 11 January 2026.
