Washington state governor joins Democratic presidential hopefuls

Posted on March 1, 2019

Washington state governor Jay Inslee on Friday became the latest entry in the crowded race to be the Democratic Party nominee for the 2020 presidential election.

Inslee claimed in a video launching his campaign that he is “the only candidate who will make defeating climate change our nation’s number one priority.”

“Our country’s next mission must be to rise up to the most urgent challenge of our time: defeating climate change,” Inslee says in the video.

The 68-year-old has been governor of the northwestern US state since 2013.

He joins a growing list of candidates vying to run against Republican Donald Trump, who is seeking reelection, in next year’s race.

They include US senators Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Amy Klobuchar and Kirsten Gillibrand; Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Obama-era housing secretary Julian Castro of Texas.
