UN spokesman: International humanitarian law prohibits Israeli army’s detonation of drinking water reservoir in Gaza’s Rafah

GENEVA: UN Human Rights Spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, said the international humanitarian law categorically prohibits the Israeli occupation army’s blowing up of a drinking water reservoir in the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.

In a press statement today, the UN Human Rights Spokesperson said that under international humanitarian law, it is strictly prohibited to attack facilities indispensable to the survival of the civilian population, including water resources”, noting that Israel has a well-documented failure to ensure accountability for violations of international law.

He stated that it is essential to find solutions at the international level to address Israel’s long-standing accountability gap.

The occupation forces deliberately destroyed water networks, wells and desalination plants in the Gaza Strip, causing a severe water crisis. The lack of fuel also limits the o
