Muscat, The Supreme Committee tasked with tackling developments resulting from coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic held a meeting at the Interior Ministry today under the chairmanship of Sayyid Hamoud bin Faisal al-Busaidi, Minister of Interior.

In its review of procedures for protection against the spread of infection with the disease, the Supreme Committee expressed deep concerns about a spike in infection and death cases.

The Committee also expressed its strong dismay about the lack of compliance of many people with precautionary measures specified by the departments concerned to prevent infection and propagation of the disease in society.

It noted that such

irresponsible behaviour contributed to the transfer of the contagion to relatives of the nonchalant individuals and their colleagues at the workplace, eventually permeating the entire society.

The Committee reiterated its emphasis on the extreme danger of Covid-19, the non-availability of any vaccine for protection from the disease, the non-existence of perfect treatment against the virus and the great probability of many complications and high risks it poses to health, often leading to death in a wide range of all age-groups.

The Committee would like to bring to the notice of all members of society that the spread of this disease laid immense pressure on services rendered by the medical sector, notably intensive care units (ICUs). This pressure negatively impacted the services offered to Covid-19 patients, as well as patients suffering from other diseases.

To deter the spread of infection in more members of society (thereby causing more complications and more deaths), and, to protect the medical staff and safeguard medical services, the Committee decided to toughen penalties slapped against those who breach the decisions it undertakes to curb the spread of the pandemic, hoping that all will shoulder their responsibilities.

The Committee stressed that it will go ahead with the strict handling of violators, in a variety of ways, with the prime aim of securing the health and safety of individuals and society. The action may include publishing the names and photos of offenders in the media means.

Also, based on the role of the Supreme Committee in alleviating economic impacts of Covid-19, and, to moderate financial burdens on tax-paying companies and establishments, the Committee undertook a set of procedures related to taxes imposed on those companies and establishments. The Tax Institution will announce the said procedures later, said the Supreme Committee.

May the Almighty Allah protect all against all evils and harms!
