Madrid, The results of the new global ”webometrics” index released in
January 2019, known globally as the Spanish Ranking, has revealed the inclusion of Sultan
Qaboos University (SQU) as one of the best universities in the world.
SQU ranked 1353 globally, 13th among the Arab universities and ranked first among the
Omani universities. It is followed by the University of Nizwa at the rank of 3507 in the world,
102 in the Arab and the second in Oman, then Sohar University ranked 4692 globally, 172
at the Arab level and third in Oman, followed by the German University of Technology in
Oman (GUtech) which ranked 4955 globally and ranked 187 among the Arab universities
and the fourth among Omani universities.
In the sub-indices of the ranking that address the quality of educational and research
services for about 25 thousand universities and institutes worldwide, SQU scored 642
points in the openness index, 967 points in the presence index, 3474 points in the overall
impact index and a total of 1162 points in the index of excellence.
The University’s Webometrics index is the world’s largest university assessment system
covering more than 20,000 universities.
The index is based on scientific research and technical files and is periodically updated
every 6 months in January and July of each year. The ranking of the best universities in
publishing academic research on the Internet includes standards for the publishing site
itself and covers 20% of the size of the site and 15% for technical files and search output,
15% (for Google scientists) and 50% for links and impact size.
