Madrid, With Atletico 1-0 up as the clock ticked
down, they had moved into first place in the table and the coach was
also set to claim a maiden league win over Barcelona as Atletico boss.
However, that was snatched away in the 89th minute when
Ousmane Dembele levelled, keeping Barcelona in top spot and
ensuring Simeone’s wait for a win goes on.
Almost seven years have passed since he took over in the
Spanish capital in January of 2012.
Since then, he has faced Barcelona 14 times in LaLiga
Santander and has been unable to deliver three points during that
time, losing nine times and drawing on five occasions.
As it happens, they have also been eliminated on both occasions
they have drawn the Catalan club in the Copa del Rey.
Interestingly, it is a different case entirely when Cholo takes
them on in European competition.
On two occasions, Atletico have eliminated Barcelona at the
quarter-final phase of the UEFA Champions League under Simeone.
The first came in 2013/14 when the Rojiblancos reached the
final in Lisbon and they did so again in 2015/16 when they were beaten
in the semi-final by Real Madrid.
Saturday night’s clash was a big one in terms of the LaLiga
With Costa’s goal, Atletico had moved into first place, but lost it
in the dying minutes.
However, a draw is not a bad result for Simeone as the
Rojiblancos have ensured they keep pace at the top of the table and
remain just a point off the pace.
The biggest beneficiaries of the draw were Sevilla, who can
move top themselves with a victory against Valladolid, the Spanish
MARCA newspaper reported.
