Simeone Wait for League Win over Barcelona Goes on

Madrid, With Atletico 1-0 up as the clock ticked

down, they had moved into first place in the table and the coach was

also set to claim a maiden league win over Barcelona as Atletico boss.

However, that was snatched away in the 89th minute when

Ousmane Dembele levelled, keeping Barcelona in top spot and

ensuring Simeone’s wait for a win goes on.

Almost seven years have passed since he took over in the

Spanish capital in January of 2012.

Since then, he has faced Barcelona 14 times in LaLiga

Santander and has been unable to deliver three points during that

time, losing nine times and drawing on five occasions.

As it happens, they have also been eliminated on both occasions

they have drawn the Catalan club in the Copa del Rey.

Interestingly, it is a different case entirely when Cholo takes

them on in European competition.

On two occasions, Atletico have eliminated Barcelona at the

quarter-final phase of the UEFA Champions League under Simeone.

The first came in 2013/14 when the Rojiblancos reached the

final in Lisbon and they did so again in 2015/16 when they were beaten

in the semi-final by Real Madrid.

Saturday night’s clash was a big one in terms of the LaLiga

Santander lead.

With Costa’s goal, Atletico had moved into first place, but lost it

in the dying minutes.

However, a draw is not a bad result for Simeone as the

Rojiblancos have ensured they keep pace at the top of the table and

remain just a point off the pace.

The biggest beneficiaries of the draw were Sevilla, who can

move top themselves with a victory against Valladolid, the Spanish

MARCA newspaper reported.
