Madrid, Julen Lopetegui is biding his time with

new signings Mariano, Alvaro Odriozola and Vinicius Junior as the trio

are yet to play a single minute for Real Madrid so far this season.

Out of the new players, only Thibaut Courtois has been given an

opportunity in recent weeks, after spending a long time settling in,

replacing Keylor Navas in goal.

The only change in Real Madrid’s starting XI against Athletic Club on

Saturday night was Dani Ceballos who was then replaced by Casemiro

at half-time with Isco also coming on for Luka Modric and finally Lucas

Vazquez for Gareth Bale.

The latter substitution was particularly curious as it could have been

the time for Mariano to shine with Madrid needing a goal to complete

the comeback but, despite warming up, the forward remained on the

bench, the MARCA said.

The same was true for Odriozola who also had to watch the entire

game from the sidelines, while Vinicius did not even make the match

day squad once again.

On Sunday the Brazilian youngster will play for Castilla as per the

wishes of Lopetegui, who is yet to give him his chance.

The only other incoming, Andriy Lunin, headed out on loan this

summer.

The MARCA added that with Real Madrid’s new signings, apart from

Courtois, not contributing much at the moment, Lopetegui is favouring

the old guard until he decides the need for a plan B.
