Dubai, Dr. Salem bin Ali al-Mahrouqi, Director
General of Investment Affairs at the Public Authority for Mining (PAM)
was elected as Chairman of the Geological Society of America (GSA)
for the Middle East in Dubai and member of the GSA Advisory Board in
the USA. Dr. al-Mahrouqi is the first Omani to occupy this regional
post.
The GSA is the biggest professional geological society in the
world with 129,000 members from 129 countries. The Society, which
has 6 regional offices round the world, focuses on geology and
vocational developments of geologists. It carries out many activities,
such as organizing seminars, conferences, workshops and specialized
training courses on oil geology. It also publishes many scientific
publications and books.
The Society organizes many specialized competitions, the most
important of which is the Imperial Barrel Award Competition at which
the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) came third at the international
level many times.
