Vienna, The Sultanate represented by Majlis A’Shura participated in the 5th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament. It was organized by the International Parliament Union in cooperation with Austrian parliament and the United Nations.

In comments during the second discussion session, Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of Majlis A’Shura, spoke about ways to combat misleading information and hate speech within or outside internet sites. He underscored the need to draft stronger regulations that address hate speech and rally unity towards this goal. “We have to work hand in hand in the face of hate speech, intrigue and chaos that marred human communities’ peace. We have to agree about devising proper legal instruments to address hate speech and sarcasm towards religions. We have also to respect minorities and protect their human dignity,” added Al Maawali.

He said that the Basic Law of the State in the Sultanate (as stated in Article 35, guarantees the rights of speech within the limits of the law. This, he said, was affirmed by His Majesty Sultan Haitham Bin Tarik in his Royal speech. His Majesty said, “We, as citizens and expatriates, take pride in the fact that Oman lives in purview of the law. “Our State of Institutions is established on principles of freedom, equity and the equality of opportunities based on justice, respect for the rights of individuals and their liberty. The rights of everyone are guaranteed, including the right for self-expression stated in the Basic Law of the State,” said Al Maawali.

The Majlis A’Shura’s participation was articulated by Al Maawali and Dr. Said Salim Al Wahaibi, Majlis A’Shura member.

The Majlis held bilateral talks with heads of parliaments in the region and the world at large. The meetings were an opportunity to exchange views about regional and international issues. The Majlis team also held a consultation meeting with heads of Arab parliaments.
