Oman Center for Traditional Music Collects, Documents Traditional Arts in Maqshan and Thumrait

Muscat, A team from the Oman Center for Traditional Music, of the Sultan Qaboos Higher Center for Culture and Science at the Diwan of Royal Court is currently performing, as part of its annual cultural plan, a field collection and documentation in the Wilayats of Maqshan and Thumrait from December 1st to 10th.

The purpose of this task is to document the traditional musical arts, their practitioners and the occasions where they are used in the two wilayats, in addition to the changes that may have occurred in the practice of these arts and their social status.

The team is visiting the Niyabats and other administrative centres in the two wilayats. A visit plan is designed in coordination with Walis’ offices and their deputies, who showed cooperation and interest in the task and their keenness to ensure its success.

On the other hand, the Center conducts field visits annually, documenting traditional music, its musical instruments and lyrics. The field documentation is done by using the latest audio and video equipment. All recordings are stored as documents in the Audio and Video Library of the Center, which was established in 1984, and contained hundreds recordings from various wilayats of the Sultanate.
