Stockholm, No one has died in Europe after a monkeypox infection, according to the data made available to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Regional Office for Europe.
The two bodies have registered 5,949 cases of monkeypox in 33 European countries and regions, they said today after a joint analysis of the outbreak.
They said 5,266 cases have been reported to the European surveillance system Tessy and all but one had been confirmed by laboratories.
The vast majority of those infected, or 99.6%, are men, and 42% of those infected are between 31 and 40 years old, they said.
The WHO recently noted that the current outbreak is centred in Europe, with almost 90% of all confirmed cases since mid-May recorded in the region.
