Massive 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes South Pacific

Virginia, The US Geological Survey said that a 7.1

-magnitude earthquake struck a region in the South Atlantic close to

the Sandwich Islands north of Antarctica.

The agency initially reported a 7.5 magnitude earthquake, which

occurred in a remote area and a great distance underground. The US

Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the earthquake did not pose a

threat of a tsunami.
