London, A team of marine archaeologists found a
2,400-year-old Greek ship believed to be the world’s oldest sunken
ship off the coast of Bulgaria.
After a 2000-square-kilometer survey of the seabed, the British-
Bulgarian Maritime Archaeology Project (MAP) in the Black Sea found
more than 60 pieces of shipwrecks.
Jon Adams, the Southampton University team leader, said using
radioactive carbon had confirmed that the Greek merchant vessel,
whose location was discovered last year, was the oldest known wreck
of a ship.
He added that the design used to build the ship was never seen
except in pictures decorating ancient Greek pottery, such as the Siren
Vase in the British Museum.
