Turin, Manchester United scored a 2-1 victory
over Juventus in the UEFA Champions League with a goal by free-kick
by Juan Mata and Alex Sandro’s opposite goal to revive the winner’s
hopes of reaching round 16 of the championship.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored the lead with a shot in the 65th
minute after Juventus dominated the match.
Jose Mourinho’s crew looked very harmless on the offensive
level, but the Portuguese coach pushed Mata, Marwan Villaini and
Marcus Rushford before the end of the game to lead an unexpected
return in the result and restore the atmosphere of the epic victory 3/2
against the same rival in Turin in the semi-finals of the 1999 version
after Man United was late by two goals.
The sudden awakening of Manchester United prevented
Juventus from confirming first place in the group and securing the
qualification to the round 16 and turned Group 8 upside down.
Juventus remain in the lead with nine points but Man United are
second with seven points, two points ahead of third-placed Valencia.
Young Boys are on the bottom of the table and are out of competition.
Man United became the first British team to beat Juventus in their
home in 15 years, the last to do so, led by Ryan Giggs when beating 3
-0 in Stadio delle Alpi in 2003.
