Majlis A’ Shura Discuses the Minister of Social Development Statement

Majlis A’Shura discussed today at the 13th regular session of the third sitting 2017/2018 of the 8th term 2015/2019 that was held under the chair of Khalid bin Hilal al-Maawali, Chairma of Majlis A’Shura, the statement of Sheikh Mohammed bin Suayed al- Kalbani, Minister of Social Development.

The statement included 8 themes that covered the social security, the relief and emergency aid, the elderly & people with disabilities, the family development programs, the non-governmental organizations, the social work, the development programs implemented by the Ministry and the social work strategy 20116/2025.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Suayed al- Kalbani, Minister of Social Development delivered a speech where he highlighted the role of the Ministry in creating partnership with the private sector organizations to support the prosthesis programs. He also touched on the family development programs with relation to family guidance and counselling.

He reviewed means of developing family protection programs in light of the social work strategy, as well as the efforts made to implement the child protection law and its executive regulation.

As for the efforts of the Ministry about enhancing the role of the NGOs, he said that NGOs sector has been accorded with great care by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said which was culminated by Sultan Qaboos Award for Voluntary Work � an elite award conferred upon those who make tangible contribution to voluntary work.

The members gave some remarks and inquiries about the statement which centered around the importance of continuing subsidy to social security families, rehabilitating people with disabilities and improving the services rendered to the elderly.

The Minister of Social Development said that the Ministry has provided a concept for a law on serving and caring for the elderly people in the Sultanate. He added that the home-care program is still going on in cooperation with the Ministry of Health.

In response to inquiries about the private sector initiatives with regard to childcare centers, the Minister of Social Development pointed out that the Ministry in cooperation with the private sector will lay the foundation stone for the autist child center. He noted that the private sector companies implement many initiatives to build child care centers.

The members of Majlis A’Shura highlighted the importance of changing the eligibility terms according to the standard of living and that they should take into consideration the salary scales and inflation. They also called for revising the mechanisms used to distribute the social security subsidy.
