Tokyo, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

began today a two-day visit to Iran amid mounting tensions between

Tehran and Washington over a nuclear deal between Iran and the six

countries.

Shinzo Abe, Japan's first prime minister to visit Iran for 41 years, is

scheduled to hold talks with the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani

later.

"Based on traditional friendly relations between Japan and Iran, I

would like to exchange frank views to defuse tensions," Abe told

reporters as he left Haneda airport in Tokyo.
