Madrid, The French striker Antoine Griezmann
may have won the World Cup in 2018, but he didn’t get his hands on
the Ballon d’Or and he joked at last Monday’s gala that the UEFA
Champions League might be considered more important than the
trophy France won in Moscow.
Well, the European Cup is indeed a major deal for many and the
No.7 will know that he’ll need a strong performance on the continental
stage in 2019 if he is to fight to take the award away from Luka Modric
next year.
Having taken part in one final and missed a penalty in it, and
with this season’s showpiece event taking place at the Estadio Wanda
Metropolitano, Griezmann and Atletico Madrid are extra keen to make a
statement in Europe in 2018/19.
For Griezmann, he can do so on an individual level by
competing for the top scorer award, which is unfamiliar territory for him.
Already he has four goals to his name after scoring a brace at
home to Club Brugge and after netting one in each of the home
matches against Borussia Dortmund and Monaco.
His next challenge comes in the city of Bruges tonight.
He’ll aim to move closer to Lionel Messi and Robert
Lewandowski, who both have six goals already, and to Edin Dzeko,
who has five.
If he does manage to score, then it could help Atletico to a win
and to first place in their group, which could in turn boost the No.7’s
scoring chances in the knockout rounds, the Spanish MARCA
newspaper reported.
