Barcelona, When Barcelona signed Philippe Coutinho, they handed him the squad number recently vacated by Javier Mascherano rather than the more obvious No. 7 shirt.
With the No. 14 on his back, the club could hark back to Johan Cruyff’s time at the Camp Nou but there was a more significant reason for the move.
Barcelona were just starting their talks with Antoine Griezmann’s camp over a summer move from Atletico Madrid at that time, and the striker’s preference for No. 7 meant the club saved it for him.
However, Griezmann failed to sign and now the Blaugrana have handed Coutinho the No. 7 ahead of the 2018/19 season, the MARCA reported.
