Caretaker Information Minister, Dr. Manal Abdel Samad Najd, called in a statement today to “intensify awareness campaigns and highlight the preventive instructions issued by the General Directorate of Civil Defense,” in wake of the recent forest fires in Akkar, stressing the importance of self-commitment, responsibility and citizenship to avoid other fires in other regions.
Abdel Samad also called for concerted efforts to measure and manage the risks of this environmental and humanitarian disaster, which is renewed annually.
The minister considered that a real environmental catastrophe has swept Lebanon, threatening its green wealth, after the fires devoured large areas of forests and woodlands in several regions in Akkar, and led to huge irreparable losses in lives and properties.
She stressed that “Lebanon is still in the eye of a storm of successive financial and economic fires, and today environmental fires, we must reduce their risks with all available capabilities, in order to avoid the outbreak of similar fires,” pointing out that their decline does not mean that they will not renew or erupt in other regions.
Finally, Abdel Samad mentioned the guidelines published by the Ministry of Information on its website.
